You are in the grocery store, filling your cart with the items on your weekly shopping list when you find yourself in the candy aisle, bakery or cookie and snack aisle. This was NOT on your list but here you are anyway. Suddenly you are struck with a powerful desire for a Heath bar, strawberry lemonade cake or a package of Oreos. Your heart starts to beat faster and your mouth floods with saliva. It’s as if your body is demanding that you feed it sugar even though your head is saying “NO!”
How can this be happening? This reaction is very real. It has been proven that sugar is as addictive as heroin, crack and meth and the cravings are just as strong. Sugars in the form of refined sugar, high fructose corn syrup, beet sugars and agave (to name just a few) are incredibly prevalent in the processed and packaged foods that many of us consider a staple in our daily food intake. Most of the time we are not even aware that we are eating these sugars. It’s a sneak attack!
Sugar is the culprit for Type 2 diabetes and kidney disease, high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, Alzheimer‘s, obesity, arthritis, candida and (the biggie) cancer, really too many to name them all. In fact, cancer actually feeds and grows on sugar, if you eliminate sugar from your diet you are literally starving the cancer cells and preventing growth.
How about sugar free, it seems like it would be healthier, right? The answer to that is a resounding NO! Any product that advertises sugar free is sweetened with an artificial chemical sweetener and is even worse than sugar. Products such as aspartame and sucralose are not in any way safe or healthy. Just because the FDA has approved them does not mean they are safe. They are proven neurotoxins and dramatically increase the risk of obesity, diabetes, brain tumors and cancer.
The good news is that this addiction can be broken and you can be free from the cravings for sugar. You can drastically reduce your risk of developing chronic diseases that can come from a high sugar intake. In most instances it is possible to even reverse or manage chronic diseases without medications.
