All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking." Friedrich Nietzsche, author
"My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was sixty. She's ninety-seven now and we don't know where the heck she is." Ellen DeGeneres, actress
It tends to be a running joke in my family about how I was crawling around the house straightening the fringe on throw rugs but I wasn't walking. Evidently I was a fastidious baby.
There are some who believe the later a child walks the more mellow their temperament. There's also a belief they tend to be less accident prone. I find this untrue in my case as I frequently trip over nothing and walk into things simply because I misjudged the space.
But what I do know is that walking is one of my absolute favorite forms of physical activity.
I love to walk, I NEED to walk.
I have to experience the fresh air and the peace it provides for me everyday.
Walking just 30 minutes everyday at a brisk pace will provide you with many benefits:
Reduce your risk of coronary heart disease
Improve blood pressure
Improve blood sugar levels
Help you lose and maintain body weight
Enhance mental well being
Reduce risk of osteoporosis
Reduce risk of breast and colon cancer
Reduce risk of Type II diabetes
Walking can be done anywhere and at any time. It's the easiest form of physical activity you can incorporate into your life. It can be done alone, with a friend or in group. You could join a walking or hiking club in your area. There is no special equipment you might need and you don't have to belong to a gym.
There is not a particular type of clothing you should wear, although comfortable shoes are important but not necessary. You could even walk barefoot if your soles and tootsies are tough enough.
You could become the Mr. or Mrs. Kravits of your neighborhood! Hopefully you all remember the TV show Bewitched because if you don't then I'm really dating myself. She's the nosy neighbor who saw all the goings on at Samantha and Darren's house. I'm not suggesting you spy on your neighbors, haha!
Walking in my neighborhood gives me an opportunity to gather ideas for my landscaping and exterior home decor. I take note of the changes I notice; maybe someone painted or put in a new front door. There could be new pots and plants on a front porch. Whatever is going on I take note and enjoy myself while I'm doing it.
I also meet other walkers but we don't stop and chat for long as that defeats the purpose of sustained physical activity, most often we simply say hello and continue on our way.
There are plants and birds and rocks and things............... Wait! that's from a song, I believe it's a "Horse with no name". But it still holds true, those things are there and I enjoy looking and listening to them. My thoughts start to untangle, I gain clarity with a struggle I might be facing. I come up with some of my best ideas for writing while walking.
Breathing deeply; in through the nose and out through the mouth allows you to oxygenate your lungs and aids in detoxing your body. I do hold my breath when walking past a home that is blasting scented dryer sheets from the vents. This is one very big pet peeve for me and if you would like to learn more about this issue you can read about it here.
Walking in nature, hiking through the forest or along a dedicated hiking path, or just ambling through a park are great ways to mix it up and give yourself some additional scenery and scents.
